Retama’s
Doctors – Proven Knowledge and Experience
Dr. Mike Martin, DVM is a 1993
graduate of Texas A&M and originally from the San Antonio
area. Upon graduating from veterinary school, Dr. Martin returned
to the Lytle, Texas area to open a practice and manage a stud
farm. With the opening of Retama Park, it was recognized that
there was a need for a facility to handle the arduous task of colic
surgery, orthopedic surgery and other emergencies. It was through the
insight of Drs. Robert Lewis, Charles Graham, Tommy Hays, Byrne James
and Mike Martin that Retama Equine Hospital was opened. Dr. Martin’s
interests include colic, reproduction, foal care, lameness and
racetrack medicine.
Dr. Keith Huffman,
DVM is a 1999 graduate of Texas A&M and raised in a ranching
and agriculturally based family near Waco, Texas. Upon graduating, he
joined Dr. Martin to help support the increasing needs of the practice
in emergency care and racetrack medicine. Dr. Huffman has a special
interest in reproduction, general health management, and enjoys the
challenge of enhancing performance horses of all disciplines.
Dr. William Symm, DVM,
Dipl. ACVS is a 2002 graduate of Texas A&M and is originally from
the Kerrville, Texas area. Dr. Symm joined Retama Equine in 2007
after completing an equine surgery residency at the University of
California – Davis, where he received training in advanced surgical
techniques and facilitated several research studies. Dr. Symm has since
successfully completed his certification examination, thus becoming a
board certified specialist in equine surgery. His particular interests
focus on orthopedic surgery, airway surgery, colic surgery and lameness.
Dr. Justin
Bruening,
DVM, is also a 2002 graduate of Texas A&M and joined Retama
Equine in 2008. Originally from the Huntsville, Texas area, Dr.

his life. Dr. Bruening’s specific interests include performance horse
