During the First World War the British government demanded use of horses nationwide for the military with their owners given little choice. The only horses that were not taken were pintos because their loud colored coats were not easy to camouflage. The Romani Gypsy people were quick to decide that pintos were a better choice if they were to hang on to their horses and by the start of the Second World War the vast majority of their horses were pintos. This allowed them to keep their wagon horses and therefore their means of transport and their livelihoods.

Fast forward to 2014 and the Gypsy Horses of A Wizards Spell Ranch in Burleson, Texas are now being used by the military again. But this time in a much more peaceful and therapeutic way. The herd of over 30 Gypsy Horses ranging from newborn foals to adults now provide Horse Supported Counseling (aka equine therapy) with all sessions being on the ground, not riding, therefore accessible to all. A Licensed Professional Counselor, Horse Specialist, and the herd provide non-traditional mental health counseling often in gender specific sessions for PTSD, MST, depression, trauma, grief/loss, reintegration issues, or just to have a stress free time away from any issues. Military wives and families also suffer when a loved one suffers and are also invited to join in therapy sessions. All sessions for our military- active, reserves, veterans- are provided at NO COST. Those in the military often thought to be tough and solve their problems themselves. Injuries you cannot see are harder to fix. Therapy animals are not new and using horses provides coping resources, anger management, and hope in ways that have been reported to accelerate healing. The World Champion Gypsy Horses and Counselors welcome our military with open arms and say THANK YOU for your service.
